The Research & Innovation function (R&I) leads Solvay into new growth territories with breakthrough innovation to generate new products, applications and processes in the field of sustainable chemistry. Partners with the GBUs to deliver more value and leverages the Group’s capabilities to improve competitiveness and create new business opportunities for Solvay and its customers.
Solvay is taking a leap for digital transformation to accelerate Solvay G.R.O.W. strategy, and our sustainability roadmap, Solvay One Planet. Digital will allow Solvay to move differently from the past, transforming all aspects of the business, from channels and processes, to data and operating models, and ultimately the entire Group culture. To make this Digital Transformation happen, Solvay has created in 2021 a dedicated Digital entity headed by a Chief Digital Officer and is reinforcing Data Science by recruiting Data Scientists across the globe to develop, maintain and improve advanced analytics models with data science techniques. As a Data Scientist you will join a multidisciplinary team, you will drive the creation of actionable insight from our data lakes, develop new approaches/algorithms, to accelerate research & development (discover new formulations and materials), produce more efficiently (improve processes, planning and scheduling) and finally, accelerate sustainability. You will be instrumental in delivering our digital and technology transformation. Large scale investment in Digital & Information Technology is expected over the next five years to accelerate our transformation and reduce complexity as well as running costs in line with our Purpose and G.R.O.W. strategy. The Research & Innovation (R&I) Data Scientist Statistics Expert will support the acceleration of our digital transformation.
He/she will work closely with Solvay domain experts in Chemistry and Material sciences to support their research activity with Data Science based solutions.
Work directly with domain experts to translate the business needs into statistics problems
Gather internal or external data and validate data quality
Leverage advanced statistical methods to analyze experimental data in chemistry, formulation, materials
Communicate results and support stakeholders in understanding and utilization of the results
Actively contribute to the development of the AI and statistics expertise with the Group R&I and the Solvay Group in general
PhD (preferred) or MS in Statistics, Computer Sciences, Artificial Intelligence or equivalent
A minimum of 2 years of experience in applied statistics
(Preferred) experience in working with chemistry and material R&I data, including applicability test results, analytical data (Spectroscopy, Spectrometry, etc) or synthesis experiments
Very good communication skills in English
Excellent problem solving skills
Excellent skills in statistical analysis, including statistical tests, exploratory analysis, unsupervised algorithms
Good practical knowledge of data preparation, cleaning, visualization
Knowledge of Design of Experiments, experience with Minitab
Good programming skills in R, Python, or other statistical scripting
(Prefered) knowledge of Machine Learning, predictive modelling, optimization
(Preferred) understanding of R&I issues in Chemistry and Materials, specifically regarding the domain of formulations
(Desired) Training and experience with Agile practices

Ability to build strong relationships with peers and colleagues across the Group R&I organization
Self-motivated and independent: The candidate will need to be able to manage a full process from business interview to analysis to results explanation
Communication skills to present updates, risks and issues in a clear & timely manner
