Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international, independent, medical humanitarian organization created in 1971 that delivers emergency aid to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, healthcare exclusion and natural disasters. MSF offers assistance to people based only on need and irrespective of race, religion, gender or political affiliation. The French section is present in around thirty countries.

As part of a permanent position, we are looking for a Lead Developer ASTapp for MSF Foundation.

Mission

Context
MSF Foundation is a specialized entity created by Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) dedicated to medical innovation targeting underserved patients and contexts. Ongoing projects include the use of 3D printing to create customized prosthetics and the development of a machine learning-powered smartphone app to streamline and automate antibiotic susceptibility testing.

The project -and its corresponding “ASTApp”- will contribute to the fight against antibiotic resistance, a major public-health concern projected to cause 10M deaths per year by 2050. ASTapp guides lab technicians to interpret tests that measure resistance to antibiotics and will help clinicians choose the best course of treatment and ensure patients receive the most appropriate antibiotics.

The ASTapp concept and usability is being validated through field testing, and the project is now accelerating and growing in complexity, evolving from a standalone app to a more complete and complex system of solutions for stakeholders in the fight against antibiotic resistance; this includes features for microbiologists, lab supervisors, and clinicians.

Objectives
The MSF Foundation is hiring a lead developer to work with and take over from a team of four engineering fellows from Google leaving the project in Q3 2020. The development will lead the project through its next phase of implementation, targeting a public launch in 2021.

As well as being responsible for the ASTapp project, the successful candidate will take a leadership role within the Foundation’s team, providing technical expertise and helping shape future projects at the intersection of machine learning and medical diagnosis -initially expected to be in fields such as oncology, microbiology and medical imaging.

Main responsibilities

Contributing to the codebase to maintain and improve the application; core features include image processing and computer vision, integration with a 3rd party expert system, Android UI Work with the PM and clinical lead to turn functional requirements into technical specifications. Define the adequate technical infrastructure and stack, weighing technical requirements and strategic needs to future-proof the solution. Progressively lead and recruit a team of software engineers; Build a team culture, striving for a well-documented, tested and easily maintainable codebase; provide mentorship to members of the technical tea Lead the work in developing ML computer vision solutions (on Tensorflow) for healthcare products, with an eye for reliability, explainability and fairness constraints.

Qualités requises

BS degree in Computer Science, similar technical field of study or equivalent practical experience.

Experience in mobile development and app release, including CI.

Compétences professionnelles

Education: 5+ years of experience as a developer in a professional setting; ideally in a leadership role.

Experience required : Experience with developing in Java/Kotlin, C++, and/or JavaScript.
Experience in setting technical directions for complex projects and organizing work of a small engineering team.
Experience in developing machine learning or/and computer vision algorithms for production.
Bonus points: history of peer-reviewed publications.

Languages: French and English proficiency.

Spécificités du poste

Status: Permanent contract - Full Time - based in Paris. Some travel is expected abroad.
